What Is a Disc Bulge?

A Disc Bulge is a condition in which the outer wall of an intervertebral disc extends beyond its usual boundary. The disc material remains contained within the outer layer. A bulge may affect nearby nerves or spinal joints, although imaging findings do not always explain a person’s pain or other symptoms.

Key Takeaways About Disc Bulge

  • The outer disc wall remains intact.
  • Symptoms depend on nearby nerve or joint involvement.
  • A bulge is not the same as a disc herniation.

How Disc Bulge Works

Disc Bulge describes outward extension of a disc’s outer ring. The inner material stays contained, so the change affects the disc’s shape without a complete tear through its outer wall. Imaging may show the location and extent of the bulge, while a clinical examination considers movement, strength, sensation, and symptom patterns.

A bulge can remain away from nearby nerves, or its position can reduce available space around a nerve root. That relationship helps explain why two people with similar imaging findings may report different experiences. Disc Herniation involves a more focused displacement of disc material through a weakness or tear in the outer layer. Nerve Compression describes pressure or irritation affecting a nerve, regardless of the exact disc change that contributes to it.

From the Arrowhead Clinic Chiropractor McDonough team

When we assess a disc bulge during Back Pain Treatment, we consider the person’s symptoms alongside movement and neurologic findings. We use the term to describe a finding, not as a complete explanation of pain. Our team also considers whether nearby joints, muscles, or nerves may contribute to the presentation.

Disc Bulge in Practice: A Real-World Example

A person with low back pain may have imaging that shows a disc bulge near the lumbar spine. During Back Pain Treatment, the care team considers whether the person’s movement pattern and symptoms match that finding.
